Alberta Senior Masters Games Forms

Alberta Senior Masters Games - Update

The Alberta Sport Connection (ASC) is proud to announce the name change of the Alberta 55 Plus Games to the Alberta Senior Masters Games with an exciting new Games format.

The Alberta Sport Connection (ASC) is committed to helping Albertans stay active.

Given the uncertainty that the 2017 Alberta 55 Plus Games could be successful, the ASC will focus on the 2019 Alberta Senior Masters Games.

                                        QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Why are the 2017 Alberta 55 Plus Games being suspended?

Alberta Sport Connection (ASC) worked with the Alberta 55 plus Association to pursue the merger of the Alberta 55 Plus Summer and Winter Games into one competition focusing on active sport. This has been renamed the Alberta Senior Masters Games.

The first merged event was being planned for fall 2017. Before an announcement could be made, ASC received confirmation that the successful community had withdrawn its bid, citing challenging economic conditions and the short time to prepare financially and operationally for the Games.

Given the shortened timeline and the uncertainty that the Games could be successful, the ASC will focus on the 2019 Alberta Senior Masters Games.

Why were the Alberta 55 Plus Summer and Winter Games combined?

The existing operating model, particularly for Winter Games, presented challenges to host communities due to increasing costs for accommodation, transportation and other related expenses.

The merger was necessary due to declining interest from communities to host the Winter Games (no bids received in 2013 and 2015). A combined summer and winter event offers a quality Games experience for participants and makes the Games more attractive and viable for host communities.

Most jurisdictions across Canada, including the Canada 55 Plus Games, have combined 55 Plus Summer and Winter Games.

Will there be anything to replace the Alberta 55 Plus Games in 2017?

For 2017, the Alberta 55 plus Association, with support from ASC, is looking at adding some sports to the spring and fall recreational games already planned with the possibility of some priority single sport events as required.

Where will the 2019 Alberta Alberta Senior Masters Games be held?

All municipalities will be invited to bid on hosting the 2019 Alberta Senior Masters Games. An announcement on the successful community is expected to be made later in 2017.

Will the 2019 Alberta Senior Masters Games be a combined Games?

Future Alberta Senior Masters Games will be a combined summer and winter event focusing on active sport.

This format offers a quality Games experience for participants and makes the Games more attractive and viable for host communities.
